Surprising Number of Applicants for Deferred Action/Dream Act

9/19/2012

The Obama administration had immigration prepared to handle 250,000 applications by now for the new Deferred Action/Dream Act program. However, the actual number of those who have applied is at 75,000. At the current rate, the government estimates to receive 200,000 applicants by the November elections. Some have found that as many as 1.2 million could immediately qualify for Deferred Action/Dream Act.

Director Alejandro Mayorkas says, “If somebody submits documents that show by
the preponderance of the evidence that they meet the guidelines, we are poised
to move the cases as quickly as possible.” Therefore, it is important to get  appropriate legal advice about Deferred Action, and it can help make a person’s
application process go quickly and smoothly.

It is amazing how difficult it is for Republicans to return to this issue that Bush and the business side of the GOP dominated.
This campaign ploy to attract the Hispanic vote truly is the only hope many of these young men and women have. But the article gets it wrong by arguing that the high fees are deterring many candidates. The author barely touches on the matter by citing the AILA president's warning that "we have to be sure people understand the risks they are taking.”
The risk she speaks of and the article ignores is how the applications themselves ask each applicant to incriminate himself or his parents by asking for the details of how they managed to enter and remain in this country illegally (e.g. fake ID? Fake employment authorization? Someone else’s SSN?) This is not the amnesty Republicans cry about. This application, which is meant to help these young people, will actually identify them to be wrongdoers or in league with other wrongdoers directly to the very people tasked with deportations. Conflict of interest?
This is no long term solution. And it could be disastrous to so many young immigrants who only want to stay here and live the American dream of hard work and reward in a safe environment.
